Prey - Predator Relationships Flashcards
What is the predator - prey relationship?
The predator - prey relationship is a type of interspecific relationship
When does predation occur?
Predation occurs when one organism consumes the another
What is the effect of the prey - predator relationship on population size?
1) When predators eat prey, the population of prey is reduced.
2) Fewer numbers of preys lead to increased competition between predators
3) The predator population increases when individuals are unable to catch enough prey for their survival and reproduction
4) The decrease in predator numbers mean prey produce more and are eaten less resulting in an increased population size
5) With the increased availability in prey, the predator population also increases
Regardless of a species, the graph always follow the same pattern. Outline this pattern
Regardless of a species, the graph always follows the same pattern being:
1) the size of prey/predator both fluctuates
2) there is always more prey than predator, (the prey peak in population size is always higher)
3) the size of population will always change in prey before the predators, as there is a lag time
