Conservation Flashcards
What is conservation?
Conservation is the management of the Earth’s natural resources by humans in such a way that they can be used to the max on the future
What does conservation involve?
Conservation involves active intervention by humans to maintain ecosystems and biodiversity
What does the process of conservation involve?
Conservation process entails careful management of existing resources and reclamation of already damaged areas by human activities
What are the four main reasons for conservation?
1* Personal reasons
2* Ethical reasons
3* Economic reasons
4* Cultural and aesthetic reasons
What is the personal reason for conservation?
A personal reason for conservation is that we need to maintain our planet, therefore our life support system
What are the ethical reasons for conservation?
An ethical reason for conservation is other species have occupied Earth for longer than humans and should be allowed to co exist with us. This shows respect for living things
What are economic reasons for conservation?
An economic reason for conservation is that living organisms contain large gene pools with the ability to make millions of substances, many of which may prove valuable in the future. It has to be considered that long term productivity is greater if ecosystems are maintained in their natural balance state
What are cultural and aesthetic reasons for conservation?
The cultural and aesthetic reasons for conservation involve the fact that habitats and organisms have variety which add interest to everyday life and inspires writers, poets, artists and composers
