Hardy Weinberg Equation Flashcards
What is the hardy weinberg equation?
It is a mathematical model used to predict the allele frequencies within a population
What is a gene pool?
A gene pool is all the alleles of all genes within a population at one time
What is a population?
A population is all the individuals of one species in an area at one time
What is allele frequency?
The allele frequency is the proportion of an allele within the gene pool
When getting an answer from the hardy weinberg equation, what form do you always get at the end of equation?
Answers always either in decimal/percentages form
The hardy weinberg makes assumptions that prevent the accuracy of the model. What is the main assumption this mathematical model follows? (concerning changes in allele frequency)
This model assumers there will be no changes in allele frequency between generations within a population
By this mathematical model assuming there will be no changes in allele frequency between generations within a population. What other assumptions are made? (5pts)
1) There will be no migration to introduce/remove alleles from population (immigration/emigration)
2) No mutations to create new alleles
3) No selection favouring particular alleles
4) Mating is random (no inbreeding)
5) Population is large
Why do the assumptions surrounding this mathematical model affect the accuracy of the hardy weinberg equation?
There will not be a natural population that meets these assumptions
What is the hardy weinberg equation?
What does each letter stand for within the equation?
p squared + 2pq + q squared = 1
ALSO
p + q = 1
p = frequency of dominant allele
q = frequency of recessive allele
p squared = frequency of homozygous dominant genotype
q squared = frequency of homozygous recessive genotype
2pq = frequency of heterozygous genotype
What is the method for calculating the hardy weinberg equation?
1) Identify which parts of formula you have values for
2) Work out p and q
3) Identify which part of the formula you are working out
4) Work out 2pq
