˚₊‧ʚ♡ɞ‧₊˚ prevention & treatment ˚₊‧ʚ♡ɞ‧₊˚ Flashcards
What is primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention?
PRIMARY: little/no experience w/ substances; common in elementary/middle school.
SECONDARY: may have some experience w/ substances- goal is LIMITING use; common in high school/college.
TERTIARY: heavy drug users; goal is stopping use & preventing relapse.
Factors of successful prevention strategies?
Education given over the course of a school year, rather than semester/quarter.
Roleplaying- gets everyone more involved & allows youth to develop social skills & self-esteem; practicing drug resistance skills.
Provide ACCURATE & REALISTIC info about the short-term effects of drugs (not scare tactics)
Factors of unsuccessful prevention strategies?
Exposure, presentations by law enforcement, scare tactics.
What are the stages of recovery?
Pre-contemplation: no intention of changing behavior; may be unaware of problem
Contemplation: Aware of problem; no commitment to change
Preparation: Intent on taking action; requires self-efficacy that they CAN change.
Action: active modification of behavior
Maintenance: sustained change; new behaviors replace old
Relapse: fall back into old patterns of behavior.
Upward spiral: each time cycle is completed, learn from each relapse & hopefully grow stronger so relapse is shorter/less devastating.
What is medical detoxification?
Body going through physical withdrawal & body/brain begins to readapt to absence of substance; can be pharmacological or psychosocial.
