Prevention of Accidents Flashcards
Risk Assement
Identify dangers when carrying out an activity and taking action to reduce dangers.
Power supplies to all mains operated portable appliances should be tested by a qualified engineers (PAT - Portable Appliance Testing)
Safety Features in a Mains Electrical System
Fuse- Placed in the live lead of the supply, designed to burn out and break the circuit if too much current flows. To calculate a fuse value P= V x I. Fuse values should be the next highest value so there is some room for spikes
Other Safety Features
Double Isolation- A square in a square indicates double insulation and does not require a earth lead
Earth pin- on a mains plug is the first pin to connect and the last to disconnect
Circuit breakers- Often found in the mains fuse box are usually thermal or magnetic and unlike a fuse it can be reset. Called RCCB (residual current circuit breaker)
