What did Ignaz Semmelweis discover in the 1850s?
A
He noticed that there was a higher baby death rate from doctors who just did autopsies compared to midwifes. He told his medical students to wash their hands before and after procedures. There was an immediate decrease in deaths

What were some other discoveries in the late 1800s?
A
Louis Pasteur made vaccines against anthrax and rabies. Joseph Lister made chemicals to destroy pathogens. Microscopes improved so we could see pathogens

How can you prevent the spread of communicable diseases?
A
Hygeine (e.g washing your hands), isolating the infected, destroying vectors (e.g mosquitos) and vaccination
