Human Defence Responses Flashcards
How does your skin defend your body from pathogens?
It produces antimicrobial secretions to destroy pathogenic bacteria. Healthy skin is covered with microorganisms that help protect you from pathogens.
How does your respiratory system defend you from pathogens?
Your nose is full of hairs that produce mucus and trap any pathogens in the air. The trachea and bronchi also produce mucus to defend your body
How does your digestive system defend you from pathogens?
The stomach produces acids that destroy any pathogens that are in your mucus when you swallow, as well as the majority of pathogens you intake when you eat food and drink
How do white blood cells defend you from pathogens?
They ingest microorgansims, destroying them. They produce antibodies that target specific bacteria and viruses and destroy them. Some produce antitoxins that counteract toxins produced by pathogens
