Pressure Belts And Currents Flashcards
What happens when air is heated
It becomes lighter, rises and gives low pressure on the ground beneath it
What happens when air becomes colder
It becomes heavier, sinks and gives high pressure on the ground
What is wind
The movement of air from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure
What happens at surplus areas
Our planet receives most heat at the equator and here the heat rises, cools and condenses to form huge rain clouds
What happens to the remaining air at surplus areas
The remaining air travels in the upper atmosphere to 30N/S and then sinks down, cooling and drying out to form cloudless skies over the tropics of Capricorn and cancer
What is the coriolous effect
The force generates an anti-clockwise spin of the earth which shapes the winds on the earths surface
What happens between the earths pressure belts
Winds will travel from high pressure to low pressure in an anti-clockwise direction and are curved by the earths spinning rotation called the coriolous effect
