Hjulstrom Curve Flashcards
What is the hjulstrom curve
Shows the relationship between the velocity of the river and the size of the size of the particles that can be eroded, transported and deposited
What is the main factor that controls the processes of erosion, transportation and deposition
Rivers velocity
Why is higher velocity needed to transport clay
Harder to erode clay and silt as clay particles COAGULATE together therefore they are larger and have increased surface area which requires more energy to erode
What trend does the hjulstrom curve show
Larger particles require more velocity
Smaller particles require less velocity
EXCEPT CLAYS AS THEY COAGULATE
What is the drip curve
Velocity which the particles of a particular size can no longer be carried and therefore are deposited
What is the pick up curve
The velocity needed to pick up and erode particle sizes
What happens when velocity drops below the line of critical velocity
Particles will be transported or deposited
