Stage One: Party Nominations
Candidates declare their intent to seek the nominations
Each state holds a partisan election
Candidates are awarded delegates based on their percent of the vote

Stage Two: General Election
Election day is always the Tuesday after the first Monday in November
The candidate that wins a majority of the votes in the Electoral College becomes president
what is Electoral college?
Required by the Constitution
Consists of Electors who cast a direct vote for president
how many electors are there and what is it?
538 total Electors
Number of Electoral for each state is determined by House of Representatives + Senate
Electors are chosen by the citizens through their votes and what else?
Since Electors pledge themselves to one of the candidates before the election, citizens are essentially casting an indirect vote for president
The candidate that wins the popular vote in a state receives all of that state’s electoral votes
Except Maine and Nebraska
The goal of each candidate is to win enough states to compile a majority in the Electoral College (270 votes)
what happens when no candidate compiles a majority?
If no candidate compiles a majority, then the top three vote-getters stand for election in the House of Representatives
