Broca’s Aphasia
loss of ability to form sentence or find word
SLP & support group to practice speech
Wernicke’s Aphasia
nonsensical speech, innability to respond properly but can comprehend
group therapy, context-based therapy (support but not correct)
Apraxia of Speech
kids: avoiding speaking, wrong stress of syllables
Adult: slow speaking rate, using wrong words
SLP 3-5x a week, spontaneous recovery
Stuttering
repetition of words, inability to express sentence fluently
speech modification, stuttering modification, stutter-affirming treatment
Dysphonia
vocal cord spasms, open or closed, changes speech (raspy or breathy)
botox, voice therapy
Alexia
loss of semantic processing, loss of visual word processing
Relearn reading: Multiple oral reading (repeated reading over extended period), kinaesthetic tracing (trace word to retain)
Dystartha
slurred speech, difficult pronouncing words leads to loss of clarity and articulation
speech therapy exercises, treat underlying cause
