Q

How do you formulate a prescription?

A

When seeing a patient follow a proformo to collect all the informaiton you need about them.
Then have a grid at the bottom where you list their prescriptions and the date they were given. You may note down some herbs as you talk to them if you get some ideas which may be intuitive or rational.
Then come up with a script with % - Bendle usually gives 300ml with an instruction to have 5ml three times a day (as a tincture), so about 100ml-105ml a week on average - generally uses 1:3 tinctures.
May list a tea and seperate mix for sleep, or an ointment or cream.
Formulate it but then review it - eg do these herbs support each other? Is this safe? Is she pregnant? Will it react with existing drugs? Keep track of changes over time.

Q

How many herbs do you put in?

A

Some herbalists like ‘simples’ which is use of one herb which can help build faith in a plant
Polypharmacy means the use of many combination mixes eg Napiers original approach
Many herbalists know take a middle route of 5-6 herbs in a ticture prescription
With teas its about 1 oz per pint - you need to make sure you give enough with teas
