What is presbycusis
Age-related sensorineural hearing loss.
Causes of presbycusis
Loss of hair cells in cochlea, loss of neurons in cochlea, reduced endolymphatic potential, atrophy of stria vascularis
Presbycusis risk factors
Age, male, family history, loud noise exposure, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, ototoxic medication
Presbycusis presentation
> 55yrs with gradual bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Loss of higher-pitched sounds first. May be associated tinnitus
Presbycusis differentials
Acoustic neuroma, cholesteatoma, otosclerosis, noise-induced hearing loss, Meniere’s disease
Presbycusis management
Cannot be reversed. Hearing aids, Reduce ambient noise as much as possible, Cochlear implants if hearing aids not sufficient
