Acoustic neuroma Flashcards
What is an acoustic neuroma
Benign tumour of the Schwann cells surrounding vestibulocochlear nerve. AKA vestibular schwannoma
Acoustic neuroma presentation
40-60 yrs gradual onset unilateral sensorineural hearing loss, unilateral tinnitus, dizziness + fullness of ear
Acoustic neuroma pathophysiology
Usually unilateral. Bilateral acoustic neuromas associated with neurofibromatosis type 2 (genetic condition where benign tumours grow along nerves)
Can be associated with facial nerve palsy if tumour grows large enough
Acoustic neuroma investigations
Audiometry to assess hearing loss
Brain CT or MRI (preferred)
Acoustic neuroma management
Monitoring if small and minor symptoms
Surgery to remove tumour
Radiotherapy to reduce growth
