What are Crisis Event Characteristics?
- Percieved as extremely negative
- Causes feelings of helplessness, powerlessness, and entrapment
- May occur without warning, suddenly, and unexpectedly
What does PREPaRE stand for?
Prevent and Prepare for psychological trauma
Reafirm physical health and perceptions of safety and security
Evaluate psychological trauma risk
Provide interventions
and
Respond to psychological needs
Examine the effectiveness of crisis prevention and intervention
What are Crisis Classifications?
- Acts of war and/or terrorism
- Violent and/or unexpected death
- Threatened death and/or injury
- Human-caused disasters
- Natural disasters
- Severe (nonfatal) illness or injury
What variables affect an event’s trauma potential?
- The type of disaster impacts an event’s trauma potential.
Human vs. natural
Intentional vs. accidental
- The interaction between event predictability, consequences, duration, and the crisis event also influences the crisis event impact on a person.
What are the Levels of Schol Mental Health Crisis Response?
- Minimal - just a a typical day
- Building (or School) - roles change to address crisis, but school level can handle situation, changes your schedule
- District (Central) - school level team can not adequately address the situation, clears your schedule
- Community or Regional - outside agencies coming to support the the schools, clear your calendar
What is the ICS and what role do school based mental health professionals play?
ICS = Incident Command Structure - it is a structure defined by FEMA and DHS and used by all levels of government/tribal gov
- provides a common command structure and language for responders/schools/agencies
- School employed MH providers functioning (generally) within the Operations section
