Metabolic screening
- done close to hospital discharge as possible ~ sent to state lab
- heel needs to be warm for poke
- blood drops on paper
positive results on metabolic screening =
need further testing done
follow usually done by primary care
Hearing screening
screening ~not diagnostic
if referred results = need follow up within 2 months
When is Vitamin K given and why?
given within first hour of life
baby has no clotting cascade
needs to be given to prevent bleeding
Hepatitis B
given in first 24 hrs of birth
need to confirm moms hep B status prior to delivery
If mom is Hep B positive, what is given to newborn?
Hep B vaccination
immunoglobulin
Erythromycin ointment
given in eyes
to prevent chlamydial and gonorreal infections ( Can cause blindness)
Congenital Cardiac Screen
Pre ductal O2 sat on right hand
Post ductal on right foot
O2 sats over 95% on both ….shouldn’t have more than a 3% difference
glucose screening
1 st hour should be over 25 mg/ dl
between 1 hr and 4 hrs should be 25-35 mg/dl
after 4 hrs should be over 45 mg/dl
***treatment with IV dextrose
Vesicles anywhere on body not normal ….
needs workup
only 1 vessel in umbilical cord could be indicative of what?
renal, cardiac or skeletal issue
