If there is a broken rail or broken fishplates, and you have been advised by the signaller, how should you proceed?
you must proceed at no more than the speed the signaller tells you

If an overline bridge has been struck, and you have been asked the check the bridge before passing under it, what are your actions?
- stop the train before passing under the bridge
- check for any obvious damage, including debris on the line
- tell the signaller whether the line appears to be safe for the passage of trains
- when passing under the bridge- must not 5mph
What are the classification of trains?
1- Express passenger trains or assisting trains (1Z99) 2- ordinary passenger trains 3,4,6-9- Freight 5- Empty coach stock train 0- light loco
What are a drivers actions if asked to examine the line?
- reach a clear understanding with the signaller as of which portion of line to be examined
- proceed over affected portion at caution
- carry out any instructions
if travelling over suspect track defect- must not exceed 20mph
What are a drivers actions if asked to examine the line in a tunnel or poor visibility?
- must be accompanied by a competent person (if one is immediately available)
- if no competent person- must not exceed 10mph
What is the definition of permissive working?
Permissive working allows a second train to be signalled onto a running line that is already occupied, so that more than one train at a time can be on the same line on a Signal/Block section or dead end platform
What document will show if permissive working is authorised?

What situations might put trains in danger, (and instructions to be carried out accordingly)?
- an obstruction on the line which could cause danger to other trains
- a cow, bull or other large animal within the boundary fence (even it is not an immediate danger to trains)
- any other animal on or near the line which could be a danger to trains
- something wrong with another train
In what situations must you sound the warning horn
- to give a warning to anyone on or near a running line - [High & Low tone]
- to give an urgent warning to anyone on or dangerously near the line: (who does not acknowledge the warning, or appear to move clear out of the way of the train)- series of short, urgent warnings- [High Tone]
- within a possession- when starting your train when making any movement within a possession
- when passing a whistle board- between hours of 0600 & 2359 [Low Tone]
- wrong direction movements- a series of short blasts at frequent intervals [High Tone]
What are the different levels of rail adhesion?
- GOOD - rail adhesion conditions are good
- EXPECTED - rail adhesion is no worse than would be expected for the location and environmental conditions
- REPORTABLE - rail adhesion is worse than would be expected for the location and environmental conditions
What personal equipment must you have when on duty?
- a handlamp
- high visibility clothing
- a watch
- up to date notices for all lines over which you are required to work
- any other equipment as shown in your train company instructions
