Prenatal development Flashcards
Three periods of development
Germinal, Embryonic, Fetal
Germinal Period
focuses on cell division and implantation. (looks like an agglomeration of cells) (0-2 weeks)
Embryonic Period
focuses on structural formation. (fetus begins to look like a baby) (2-8 weeks)
Fetal Period
focuses on growth and maturation. (8-38 weeks)
The multiple risk model
states that the greater number of risks, the greater the negative consequences. risks are cumulative; the greater number of risk factors, the greater likelihood of a negative outcome.
How do Fetuses contribute to their own development
Baby develops preferences in the womb
Spontaneous & reflexive movement as early as 5 weeks
Form preferences fir tastes and sounds
Patterns of Milestone development
Cephalocaudal- head to toe
Proximodistal- center to peripheral (from center outwards)
Baby wants to be able to survive if its born early so it develops the essential things first
Biggest factor for survival
birth weight
Sleeper effects
issues that you don’t see arise until school years
these include issues paying attention or prioritizing. Babies under 5lbs are tracked and under 3.5 tracked even more
Teratogens
agents that raise the incidence of deviations or malformations. Ex: drugs, environmental hazards. Time of exposure to these teratogens is super important because of when parts of the body develop
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
causes death of nerve cells, so babies don’t move as much in the womb
