Overall trends in self awareness
focus on physical characteristics→ focus on internal qualities. Uniformly positive → more integrated and complex. Focus on oneself → comparison to others → focus on oneself
Milestones in self awareness
- 20 months- develop sense of self-awareness
- 3-4 years (early childhood)- children understand themselves in terms of concrete characteristics and preferences, and general context-specific characteristics
- 6-8 years- understand themselves in terms of personality traits, engage in social comparison
- 12-17- concern with social concept and social acceptance (when younger you care more about what others think about you more, care more about internalized values when older)
