18
Q

Describe religious attitudes to racism

A

We were all created by God equally.

All religions believe that it is wrong to discriminate on the grounds of skin colour or race.

Holy books and leaders teach respect, harmony, and tolerance of each other

Religions teach that people are equal and no group has lesser value than any other.

However racism still exists so many religious people believe that they have a duty to campaign against it.

19
Q

Describe religious attitudes to ageism

A

The law is not ageist – limits are set to phone good, such as an age before which people are allowed to marry.

Ages and is not confined to any particular age.

The elderly should be respected, they are wise and experienced so need to be listened to; holy books stress this.

We have a duty to look after the old and repay them for they have given in their own lives.

The young are the future and their views should be valued.

20
Q

Describe religious attitudes to sexism

A

This mainly affects women who suffer from discrimination which comes from traditional practices.

Religion says everyone is equal.

In some religious traditions women are prevented from leadership; some people regard this as sexist. However many view this differently and can we see something as discriminatory if the other person does not ?

In most religions women are not allowed to have the same rules as men, they have different roles. Women could offer a different approach in leadership to men, so providing a more holistic leadership.

Women should serve God to the highest level as a right.

21
Q

Describe religious attitudes to homophobia

A

All religions believe it is wrong to be homophobic.

It is against the law in Britain to target homosexuals and religions agree with this.

Many religions agree that it is wrong to be actively homosexual. This is because it is seen as a natural and it is impossible for sex to lead to the conception of children.

Many gay and lesbian people face little support from religion and families.

Within society and religions, prejudice against homosexuals is changing as we are seeing the growth of christian denominations such as Quakers welcoming homosexuals.

22
Q

Describe religious attitudes to religious prejudice

A

There is always potential for discrimination due to the feeling of being right.

Many wars and wholesale persecutions have been because of religious prejudice such as the crusader wars against Muslims.

Organisations have been able to ban the wearing of religious insignia where it is not required.

People are free to practice their own religion within Britain as the law protects them and it is against the law to discriminate.

Most religious groups promote tolerance of others.

For some religious people different religions are seen as being different ways to the same goal.

Religious groups often argue with and against other religious groups and violent clashes are in the news regularly such as Hindus and Muslims fighting each other in India.

23
Q

Describe religious attitudes to looks and lifestyle

A

We should not be too eager to judge based on looks.

It is character not looks that matter.

People should always be given a chance.

Religions should be tolerant and accepting of lifestyles.

Help, understanding, and tolerance should be shown.

24
Q

Describe religious attitudes to disability

A

Everyone is equal – God creates us in different ways.

We all valued despite differences.

People disabilities can actually teach us many things about attitudes to life.

Difficulties can be overcome and most people disabilities live full and fulfilling lives.

Who are we to judge the quality of life of another?.

The 1995 disabilities act makes discrimination in this respect illegal.
