Planet Earth Flashcards

1
Q

Describe modern living, the issues, and solutions.

A

Modern living is where as individuals we place huge strains on the planet and its resources. Ie. Fuel demands for transport and technology, food we buy and waste, rubbish sites.
Issues -
Cars produce polluting gas.
Families waste food, produce rubbish.
We use pesticides to grow food and these poison land.
We use lots of energy.
We consume food from fast food places where forests are cut down for cattle grazing.
Solution - take responsibility and don little to collectively have a large impact such as turning off lights, taking things off standby, eating organic, reducing carbon footprint.

Q

What are earth summits. Example?

A

These are government meetings that happen every ten years to discuss environmental issues leading to agreements between nations.
It is hoped that poor nations can be helped with these summits as they have too little money but need to develop quickly.
At Kyoto, 1997, targets were set to invest in cleaner energy - wind, solar and wave, and reduce CO2 emissions.
If these targets are met this will have a significant impact on reducing global warming.

Q

What is sustainable development?

A

This is where governments need to agree on developments which will benefit future generations as it’s wrong to leave nothing for them or swap finite resources for other finite resources.
We need to find advances and energies which will exist and benefit future generations.
We must also help poor nations so their lives can improve as well as they cannot afford to take expensive action.

Q

What is conservation?

A

The idea of protecting an area or species.
This can be done by repairing an area, such as planting trees, or protecting areas by setting up nature reserves. This can be done on a government, organisation, and individual scale, ie- going on holiday to work on an environmental project.

Q

What can we do to help?

A
Cut energy
Adopt an animal from a nature reserve.
Recycle more.
Pray for people to work together.
Going an environmental organisation such as GreenPeace.

Q

Describe the destruction of natural habitats, it’s issues, and what we can do.

A

This is damage being done by pollution and human activity.
Issues -
Deforestation is the removal of rainforests at dramatic speed.
Trees are cut down for mining, cattle ranches and building.
Trees balance carbon emissions.
Animal homes disappear and species go extinct.
Medicine ingredients are lost- plants go extinct. Our damage puts us at risk.
Solutions - cut down on our needs for land to create balance, set up international agreements to protect areas.

Q

What is pollution? What issues does it cause? How can these be resolved?

A

Pollution is where something is released in excess to cause an imbalance and damage to the environment, ie -
Acid rain, oil spills from tankers, water and land getting polluted by toxic chemicals from pesticides.
This causes issues such as ..
Contaminated rivers and waterways, fish die and we eat them.
The land becomes heavily littered and landfills are filled.
Beaches are polluted with litter and sewage. Air is polluted by factories, cars, and noise.
What are the solutions?
Reduce carbon emissions at land summits.
Recycle as opposed to littering.
Use cars and planes less.
Use cleaner fuels.
Cut the levels of toxic waste.

Q

What is the use and abuse of natural resources? What problems does it cause? What are the solutions?

A

This is where we use and rely upon minerals, plantation, oil, gas, and coal heavily.
Issues:
- we are using natural resources at a faster rate than ever.
- advances in technology demand on the use of more energy and resources, creating pollution.
- we are using these fuels at a faster rate - they took millions of years to form.
- when we find alternatives and oil runs out the world will cease to work as it did.
Solutions -
Cut down on energy
Create renewable energy such as wind, solar, and wave.

Q

What is the Big Bang theory?

A

20 years ago there was nothing
An explosion produced a cloud of dust and gas.
This settled to form the universe and the planets in it.
Earth was only mud.
Proteins in the mud and acids fused to form simple life forms.
Complex life evolves.
First human - 5 million years ago.

Q

What questions does the Big Bang theory produce?

A

How can nothing explode ?
Where did the mud come from?
How can a cloud form the universe?
How can an explosion create?

Q

How does nature reinforce belief in creation?

A

There is so much beauty, complexity, peace and calm. Too much for the world to have been an accident.
The worlds design seems deliberate - must have had a creator.
Science can’t explain how the world has become a place with the right conditions for life.
The world creates feelings of awe and wonder.
We are inspired to think of God as there is no other explanation.
