Planet Earth Flashcards

1
Q

Describe modern living, the issues, and solutions.

A

Modern living is where as individuals we place huge strains on the planet and its resources. Ie. Fuel demands for transport and technology, food we buy and waste, rubbish sites.
Issues -
Cars produce polluting gas.
Families waste food, produce rubbish.
We use pesticides to grow food and these poison land.
We use lots of energy.
We consume food from fast food places where forests are cut down for cattle grazing.
Solution - take responsibility and don little to collectively have a large impact such as turning off lights, taking things off standby, eating organic, reducing carbon footprint.

Q

What are earth summits. Example?

A

These are government meetings that happen every ten years to discuss environmental issues leading to agreements between nations.
It is hoped that poor nations can be helped with these summits as they have too little money but need to develop quickly.
At Kyoto, 1997, targets were set to invest in cleaner energy - wind, solar and wave, and reduce CO2 emissions.
If these targets are met this will have a significant impact on reducing global warming.

Q

What is sustainable development?

A

This is where governments need to agree on developments which will benefit future generations as it’s wrong to leave nothing for them or swap finite resources for other finite resources.
We need to find advances and energies which will exist and benefit future generations.
We must also help poor nations so their lives can improve as well as they cannot afford to take expensive action.

Q

What is conservation?

A

The idea of protecting an area or species.
This can be done by repairing an area, such as planting trees, or protecting areas by setting up nature reserves. This can be done on a government, organisation, and individual scale, ie- going on holiday to work on an environmental project.

Q

What can we do to help?

A
Cut energy
Adopt an animal from a nature reserve.
Recycle more.
Pray for people to work together.
Going an environmental organisation such as GreenPeace.

Q

Describe the destruction of natural habitats, it’s issues, and what we can do.

A

This is damage being done by pollution and human activity.
Issues -
Deforestation is the removal of rainforests at dramatic speed.
Trees are cut down for mining, cattle ranches and building.
Trees balance carbon emissions.
Animal homes disappear and species go extinct.
Medicine ingredients are lost- plants go extinct. Our damage puts us at risk.
Solutions - cut down on our needs for land to create balance, set up international agreements to protect areas.

Q

Describe the key features of pollution.

A

Pollution is well too much of something can cause an imbalance and damage to the environment. It is usually dumped into the water or released into the air and is usually dangerous. Examples could include acid rain, rain which is made acidic because of air-pollution from factories, Oil spills from tankers which kill birds and sea life, and toxic chemical chemicals which are spilled into rivers and land due to a buildup of pesticides.

9
Q

What problems does pollution cause?

A

Rivers and waterways become contaminated as fish die or we eat them.

Land is covered with litter and landfill dumping sites.

Air is polluted by factories, cars, and noise, which affects human health.

Beaches and the sea are polluted with sewage.

Q

What solutions are there to pollution?

A

Cut the level of toxic waste

Recycle rubbish

Used cars and planes less often

Governments can make world agreements to cut carbon emissions.

Use of cleaner fuels.

Q

Describe global warming.

A

Climate change is another phrase for this. Because global warming is happening as a result of climate change. The Earth’s temperature is getting hotter because greenhouse gases are allowing the suns rays into our atmosphere but then trap them.

Q

What are the problems caused by global warming?

A

Ice caps on melting causing seas to rise and the land to disappear under the sea.

Severe weather patterns such as floods and droughts leading to famine.

Sea life and reefs are dying as sea temperature and depth changes make the conditions wrong for life.

Animals habitats are being destroyed as climate change happens such as the polar bears which are threatened because of ice flows disappearing.

Cancers are on the increase due to more harmful rays getting through the atmosphere.

13
Q

What are the solutions for global warming?

A

Use less energy through insulate and our house is, switching off appliances, and so forth.

Industries finding alternative and renewable energy sources.

Creating more renewable energy sources with low carbon emissions such as wind farms and harnessing wave and solar energy.

Creating less pollution through recycling more, using our cars less, and reducing the factory omissions.

Everyone taking responsibility for being part of the solution including setting and hitting targets.

Q

Describe the use and abuse of natural resources…

A

These include minerals vegetation and fossil fuels.
we are using these at a faster rate than they are being produced and read we rely on the we are using these at a faster rate than they are being produced and we rely on them for travel, heating, and energy.

15
Q

What problems do the use and abuse of natural resources cause?

A

Fossil fuels are being used at a faster rate than ever

advances in technology mean more energy and resources are being used.

More people are travelling which is using up fuel.

We use these fuels at a faster rate than they are being produced it took us millions of years for these to be produced.

once oil runs out of the world will cease to work as it does

16
Q

what are solutions to the use and abuse of natural resources?

A

Cut the use of energy.

To create renewable energy such as wind power, solar power, wave energy.

17
Q

What is the big bang theory?

A

20 billion years ago there was nothing.

A big explosion produced clouds of dust and gas.

These settled to form the universe and planets in it.

The Earth was a primeval soup.

Proteins and acids in the mud fused.

Simple lifeforms began.

Life developed into insects, birds, fish, reptiles, and mammals.

The first human came 5 million years ago

18
Q

What questions are there about the Big Bang theory?

A

How can nothing explode?

What caused the explosion in the first place?

How can a cloud from the universe?

Where did the mud come from?

How can an explosion cause a perfect formation like the world?

19
Q

What do religions believe about God and nature?

A

The beauty, complexity, power, yet peace, cannot be an accident.

The world’s design seems deliberate.

How did it happen? Science cannot explain why something that began with nothing suddenly became a place with the right conditions for life.

The more you look at the beauty of the world, the more you are filled with awe.

People are inspired by the world around them to think about God.

We must therefore respect this gift and what should God by looking after it.
