Early Life Flashcards
If a child is severely disabled, abortion would be right because…
It is the lesser of two evils.
The child would live life in pain and could die prematurely.
The child may be discriminated against.
The child could never live life to the full.
The child would never be independent.
If a child was severely disabled, abortion would be wrong because…
We have no right to decide if the foetus should live.
Disabled people can live fulfilling lives.
Medical science could help in future.
Would you miss what you never had?
Whose right is it to choose?
The mother. The father. The parents. The doctor. A religious leader. What might they argue?

What do Christians believe about abortion?
God created life, only he can take it.
Catholics are entirely against abortion, life must be protected.
Protestants accept it as a necessary evil.
Abortion should be a last resort.
When does life begin?
At conception when the sperm meets the egg. 3 weeks- when the heart beats. 9 weeks - quickening. 22 weeks - viability. 40 weeks - birth.
Why do people want children?
To continue the religion.
To continue the family name.
To fulfil marriage vows and show love for one another.
Religious duty to accept God’s gift.
Why do people not want children?
They don't want the responsibility. They can't afford to. They are too old or young. Not in a stable relationship. Medical reasons.
What is the quality of life argument ?
People believe it is cruel to continue a pregnancy with a disabled foetus as the foetus may never be independent.
Others believe we have no right to decide on the quality of the life of the foetus.
The act could be seen as a lesser of two evils.
Why was the 1967 Abortion Act introduced?
Before 1967 many women died as they received abortions from unqualified people. There were 100,000 cases annually in the UK.
What was the 1967 Abortion Act?
This was made despite abortion being illegal. It could only happen if two doctors agreed that one condition applied at least: the woman has a risk to her mental/physical health; the baby could be born severely disabled; there was a risk to the mental or physical wellbeing of the children. The law meant that most women could access safe abortions. The point of viability was set at 28 weeks and it had to be done by a registered doctor in a hospital or clinic.
What was the 1990 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act?
This reduced the point of viability to 24 weeks.
What are the pro life arguments?
The life of the foetus is at least as important as the mother’s.
The foetus needs a voice.
What right do we have to decide whether it lives?
All life is sacred and should be protected.
God created life, only he can take it.
Abortion is murder.
We should not abortion due to disability - we cannot judge quality of life for another.
