Q

What was the 1967 Abortion Act?

A

This was made despite abortion being illegal. It could only happen if two doctors agreed that one condition applied at least: the woman has a risk to her mental/physical health; the baby could be born severely disabled; there was a risk to the mental or physical wellbeing of the children. The law meant that most women could access safe abortions. The point of viability was set at 28 weeks and it had to be done by a registered doctor in a hospital or clinic.

Q

What are the pro life arguments?

A

The life of the foetus is at least as important as the mother’s.
The foetus needs a voice.
What right do we have to decide whether it lives?
All life is sacred and should be protected.
God created life, only he can take it.
Abortion is murder.
We should not abortion due to disability - we cannot judge quality of life for another.

Q

Describe pro choice arguments…

A

Women know their bodies best.
They should be able to choose for themselves.
If the baby was severely disabled it would be cruel to have it.
Women should have a choice if they get raped or if their life is at risk.
The foetus is not a life in its own right until the point of viability.
Women would still get abortions.
