Why do pregnant women experience anaemia
Women’s bodies increase plasma volume whilst pregnant to protect against haemmhorage at birth. This leads to a diluted haemoglobin level.
The increased plasma volume is caused by an increase in oestrogen and progesterone which acts on kidneys to increase renin secretion which increases salt and water retention
Why are pregnant women at higher risk of GORD
abdominal pressure causes lower oesophageal sphincter to relax
why are pregnant women at higher risk of diabetes
insulin sensitivity becomes reduced
Why should heavily pregnant women not be treated lying flat on their backs
weight of baby may compress on aorta and vena cava
Pts should lie slightly to one side to prevent this vascular compression
what is an APGAR score
Activity, Pulse, Grimace, Appearance, Respiration
done at 1 and 5 mins post birth , a noteable increase should be seen
At what age do infants begin chewing/ sucking and biting objects
around 6 months
Teeth also begin to appear at this age
At what age do infants begin to enjoy solid foods and can finger feed themselves
around 12 months - often earlier
