opthamology Flashcards
macula
part of retina most densely packed with ‘seeing cells’
choroid
layer of tissue behind retina containing many tiny blood vessels
bruchs membrane
thin membrane forming barrier between choroid and retina
sclera
outer thick white layer of eye
cataracts
cloudy area in lens of eye
various different types e.g age related, congenital, traumatic
glaucoma
damage to optic nerve due to raised intracoccular pressure from fluid build up
preventable
can lead to sight loss
mild glaucoma attacks
pain in eyes and halos around lights
symptoms relieved by sleeping
full glaucoma attack
rapid deterioration of vision with intense eye pain
sensitivity to bright light
redness and watering of the eye
treatment of glaucoma
reduce production of fluid - beta blocker drops
increase drainage of fluid - laser, surgery
Age related Macular Degeneration
only central vision affected - goes blurred
caused by a build up of cellular waste under the retina
dry macular degeneration
most common type
gradual loss of central vision due to slow atrophy of photoreceptors
no treatment
wet macular degeneration
rapid progression to loss of central vision
atrophy of photoreceptors and leakage of blood and fluid at macula
laser treatment occasionally effective
diabetic retinopathy
damage to retina caused by altered blood supply due to prolonged high blood sugar levels
can lead to loss of some vision
