Predation Flashcards
Parasitoids
Lay eggs on/near host and the larvae eventually eat it
Parasites
Harm but don’t necessarily kill the host
Doomed surplus
Predation on those likely to die anyways
Ganse
Stable oscillations in the system are not a property of predator-prey interactions because complexity is a necessity
Type 1 functional response
Straight line, no satiation
Type 2 functional response
Saturation curve fixed by handling time
Type 3 functional response
Sigmoid curve has a lag at low prey densities (learning curve)
Max sustainable yields are no good because
K/2, smaller populations will be affected more, predation changes the habitat and pop characteristics of potential predators/competitors, no correlation is made for species interactions
Tragedy of the Commons
A common resource being used by many = over exploitation
Competitive Exclusion Principle
According to the principle of competitive exclusion, two similar species rarely occupy the same niche. Instead, they displace each other, taking possession of the foods and modes of life that give it an advantage of its competitors.
