Precipitation* Flashcards
revise
What are the types of precipitation?
All the moisture that falls from the Earth’s atmosphere and lands on the Earth’s surface.
rain,hail,sleet,snow,dew
How does precipitation form?
-Warm Air rises and as it does so it cools. It hits the cold air above then condensation starts to occur and clouds then form. The clouds then get too heavy to stay in the sky, precipitation then occurs.
What is the distance from the sea and precipitation?
-Most air we receive comes in from the west (across the Atlantic Ocean)
-Picks up lots of moisture from the sea surface
-Brings moisture: clouds/rain
What is the distance from the sea and temperature?
- Summer: land heats up quickly
-Sea: heats up slower than land
In summer the sea is colder than land
In autumn and winter the sea is warmer than land
-Coasts rarely get cold for heavy snow to form and lie because of this
What is relief rainfall?
-Warm moist air rises over high ground. The air cools and condenses as it rises over high ground. Cloud and rain forms. Cool air is dense and starts to sink. The rain stops
-When warm air meets high land it’s forced to rise
-When air is sinking you can’t get precipitation forming
What is convectional rainfall?
The Earth’s surface is heated by the sun. The ground heats the air in the atmosphere above it. Causes air near surface to rise, cool, reach dew point then condenses. Clouds form, then rain and sometimes lighting
-In the UK summer
How is hail formed?
-Forms in cumulonimbus clouds which can have powerful updrafts in them. Updrafts suck water droplets to the top of cloud where it’s cooler. Causes droplets to freeze. (hailstones)
It now falls but may get sucked up by the updraft again. Another layer o ice i added each time its pushed up by they updraft. Eventually it becomes so heavy it overcomes the updraft and falls to the ground.
