Air masses, Latitudes and Fronts* Flashcards
revise
What are air masses?
-Large areas of air that originate in different areas.
What are the different air masses?
Arctic Maritime
Polar Maritime
Polar continental
Tropical Maritime
Tropical Continental
What weather does the Polar Maritime bring?
-Quite cool winds
-Generally brings lots of rain
What weather does the Arctic Maritime bring?
-Cold,wet, sunny conditions
-Can bring snow
What weather does the Polar Continental bring?
-Cold, dry, weather
-Can bring moisture from sea/snow
-LIKE TROPICAL CONTINENTAL IN SUMMER
What weather does the Tropical Continental bring?
-Hot dry conditions in summer and rarely warm in winter
What weather does the Tropical Maritime bring?
-Brings mild, wet/damp weather throughout the year,
-most air mass in the UK
-Collects cloud from sea
What is frontal rainfall?
-where air masses meet
-warm and cold air DO NOT mix
-warm air rises over cold air( its lighter so it rises) cold air is dense
-Warm air cools, condenses and forms clouds that bring rain
What has latitude got to do with temperature?
Winter: northen hemisphere tilted away from sun (very little solar input)
-At the equator the suns rays are more direct as the Earth is a sphere, the temperature is higher here
What is latitude?
The term used to describe how far north or south you are from the equator.
Where does the Arctic Maritime come from?
-Highest
-NORTH/ NORTH NORTH EAST
-Doesn’t travel far South
-Arctic
Where does the Polar Maritime come from?
-2nd Highest
-NORTH WEST
-Canada
-Greenland
Where does the Tropical Maritime come from?
-4th Highest
-SOUTH WEST
-Carribean
-Azoras
Where does the Polar Continental come from?
-3rd Highest
-EAST
-East Europe
Where does the Tropical Continental come from?
-5th Highest
-SOUTH EAST
-Sahara Dessert
