precipitate reactions Flashcards
When a solid dissolves
(such as NaCl in the diagram),
the individual atoms break
away from the lattice and
are free in the water.
In this case the water is the
solvent, the salt is the solute and the mixture of the water and dissolved NaCl is called a solution.
In real life, dissolved substances/solutions are clear as the
individual atoms are tiny and spread evenly throughout the
solution.
precipitate
When 2 clear solutions are mixed, a solid sometimes forms. This solid is known as a precipitate.
insoluble vs soluble
If a substance dissolves it is soluble.
If a substance doesn’t dissolve it is insoluble
solubility
Solubility is a measure of how much of the solute can be
dissolved in a solvent.
solubility laws for ionic compounds
All nitrates are soluble
All sodium, potassium and ammonium salts are soluble
All chlorides are soluble except those of silver, lead and mercury
All sulphates are soluble except those of calcium, barium and lead
All hydroxides and carbonates are insoluble except those of sodium, potassium and ammonium
