A

Before the surgery. Breathing exercises (diaphragmatic), leg exercises, coughing (splinting), use of incentive spirometer q2h while awake, turning and ambulating ASAP

A

Smoking 4-8 weeks prior, taking OTC medications including herbal medications (green tea) 2 weeks prior, Aspirin 7-10 days prior, anticoagulants (Warfarin, Coumadin) as ordered by doctor

A

Take off jewelry, wedding band can be taped to client, braid long hair, hospital gown left untied and open on the back, remove nail polish, and have client void

A

Insulin and steroids. Abruptly discontinuing steroids can cause cardiovascular collapse. Bolus of corticosteroid is administered before and after a surgery through IV.
