What are characteristics of melanoma? ABCD
Asymmetry: sides don’t match
Border irregularity: Ragged, notched, or blurred
Color: mottling appearance, tan, brown, black, red, blue, and white
Diameter: Bigger than 6mm
What causes the most common form of cancer?
Skin cancer is the most common and the sun is the leading cause
When should you avoid the sun?
From 10am-3pm or if your shadow is short or if there isn’t one
Scleroderma
it is an autoimmune disease with a drying effect to skin
Pemphigus Vulgaris. Treatment?
it is an autoimmune disease resulting in huge blisters (Bulla) of the mouth. Treated with steroids
Acne Vulgaris
Disorder of sebaceous glands and hair follicles by resence of closed comedomes (white heads) and open comedomes (black heads)
Dermatitis
eczematous condition resulting from being in contact with a variety of irritating/allergenic materials. Itching, burning, and erythema are s/s.
Dermabrasion
Sanding of the skin for pt’s with severe acne scarring. Results in pain with inflammation and swelling.
Interventions for skin cancer
Wear a hat, apply sunscreen, avoid sun from 10am-3pm
Interventions for dermatitis
Remove irritants ASAP. Relieve symptoms with wet cool dressings. avoid excess heat and perspiration, Use corticosteroid cream to decrease secondary inflammatory response
Interventions for dermabrasion
Apply cold pack to face and sleeping with head up
When should you change acute and chronic wound dressings?
Chronic: q48-72 hours
Acute: q24 hours
Interventions for acne vulgaris
Accutane reduces sebaceous gland size. Side effects include chielitis (dry, crack lips) and teratogenic (birth defects) Females taking this should be placed on birth control.
Psoriasis
hereditary defect that causes overproduction of keratin. Manifests as patches of erythema covered with heavy, dry, silvery scales.
