Explain Mob football and who and when it was played during Pre Industrial Britain?
Mob football was a violent game in which people fought each other to try and get a ball to the other team’s goal. This would be played only by the lower classes and was only played on Holy days
What were the 2 social classes and key characteristics?
Upper-Land owners, had much more power, usually lived in huge houses
Lower-Peasants who were usually manual workers
Name 3 sports in which the lower class would particpate in?
Smock racing
Mob Football
Cock Fighting
Bare knuckle boxing
Prize Fighting
How did education affect the sports in which was played?
Upper classes were decently educated which meant that they could understand rules such as real tennis
On the other hand, the poor weren’t educated so stuck with sports with little rules such as mob football
How was cricket different to most sports?
It combined both classes. The upper class played as amateurs so played for fun. While the poor played for some income as they were usually the more skilled players and needed the money

How did gender affect participation?
Women were seen as weaker and had few rights in the society. Therefore they were put into sports such as smock racing which required little ability
How did law and order affect participation?
Violent sports were allowed due to lack of law and order. Such as mob football and bare knuckle boxing
Why did time affect the lower class?
The lower class had to work for small amounts of money and this was hard labour in which took up most of the day so they didn’t have the time or effort to participate
What did transport consist of?
Mainly horse and cart which led to fixtures only being local.
