Pre-Comp Jeopardy : Characteristics of Life Flashcards
Name 6 characteristics of life
Cells, DNA, reproduction, homeostasis, growth and development, and use of energy
What are the two types of reproduction?
Asexual, sexual
Name the ways in which an organism carries out homeostasis.
Sweating, eyes adjusting to light, shivering
What is homeostasis?
Maintenance of an stable internal environment
What is the central dogma? Why is it important?
Central Dogma: DNA -> RNA -> protein
Explains how genetic information is expressed and carried out as protein
Name 6 ways in which viruses do not fulfill the characteristics of life?
1) Cells- doesn’t have its own cell, protein coat around a ball of genetic material
2) DNA- doesn’t have the ability to carry out the central dogma on its own
3) Reproduction- needs a host
4) Homeostasis- doesn’t do this
5) Growth and development- only with a host
6) Use of energy- don’t use their own energy/don’t have their own energy
What are the three tenets of cell theory?
1) cells are basic unit of life
2) all cells come from preexisting cells
3) all living things are made up of cells
