Compromise of 1850
-California enters the Union as a free state
-popular sovereignty decides if there is slavery in Utah and New Mexico territories
-the slave trade is abolished in Washington DC unless you already own slaves
-Congress passes the fugitive slave law to return runaway slaves
Kansas Nebraska Act
People would decide if they wanted slavery or not by popular sovereignty (popular vote)
Bleeding Kansas
Mini Civil War in Kansas for 3 years because people fought over whether Kansas should have slaves or not
Republican party forms
people against slavery, helped by Abraham Lincoln, formed this party in 1854
Dred Scott Case
-Supreme Court said he was not a citizen, so as property, he had no rights and couldn’t sue in court
-He tried to sue against his master’s wife because his master died and Dred Scott lived in a free state
Lincoln Douglas Debates
-Lincoln and Douglas ran for senate and held debates sharing their points
-Stephen Douglas was in favor of popular sovereignty
-Abraham Lincoln thought slavery was immoral and didn’t want slavery to expand across the states
-Lincoln lost the senatorial election
Harper’s Ferry
the biggest arsenal in the US, located in Virginia, with over 20,000 weapons
Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe, a northern woman, was so upset by the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law that she published a novel in 1852 that portrayed slavery as immoral and brutal
Election of 1860
Lincoln won this election by leaps and bounds partly because the democratic party split their votes between 2 candidates and the North had more people therefore more electors in the electoral college
Confederate States form
-Southern states formed the Confederate States of America and Jefferson Davis became their president.
-Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware all remained loyal to the Union
Secession
-to withdraw, leave
-On December 20, 1860: South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union
