‘7 functions of language’-describes the way children use language, referring to these as ‘developmental functions’ or ‘micro functions’.
What were Michael Halliday’s ‘7 functions of language’?
Instrumental, Regulatory, Interactive, Personal, Heuristic, Representational, Imaginative.
Instrumental
Lang used to fulfil a need on the part of a speaker.
e.g. ‘i want’, ‘can i have…’
Regulatory
Lang used to influence the behaviour of others.
e.g. ‘ let’s go home now’
Interactional
lang used to develop social relationships and ease the process of interaction.
e.g. ‘i love you, mum’
Personal
Lang used to express the personal preferences and identity of the speaker.
e.g. ‘me good’
Representational
Lang used to exchange information.
e.g. relaying/requesting info- ‘what does that do’
Heuristic
Lang used to learn and explore the environment.
e.g. using questions/answers to learn- ‘what’s that?’
Imaginative
Lang used to explore the imagination
e.g. imaginary worlds
