Q

Explain two religious beliefs about animal experimentation

A
  • Some Christians may agree with animal experimentation and point to the Christian belief of dominion to justify their opinion. This is the belief that God created animals for the use of human beings and they are therefore entitled to use them in any way they want. This is supported by the Bible quote - “Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.
  • On the other hand, some Christians may disagree with animal experimentation and point to the Christian belief of stewardship to justify their opinion. This is the belief that humans have a duty to care for and look after the environment which belongs to God, and should therefore not abuse animals, committing them to suffering through animal testing.

Q

Explain two contrasting beliefs about abortion

A

In Buddhism, they believe that life precedes the moment of conception because of the cycle of rebirth and therefore the timing of abortion is irrelevant. Abortion is explicitly mentioned by the Dalai Lama who said “Abortion, from a Buddhist viewpoint, is an act of killing and is negative generally speaking.”

Whilst Muslims are also mainly against abortion, they believe that at 120 days the soul is given to the foetus. Therefore, Muslims regard the timing of abortion as important, and may accept one completed early in the pregnancy.

Q

Explain two ways in which belief about creation influences Christians today

A
  • One way in which belief about creation influences Christians today is that it shows that God is omnipotent and should therefore be worshipped
  • Another way in which belief about creation influences Christians today is that it could provide comfort to know they were created for a purpose. They are influenced to believe that everything is in God’s plan and some therefore believe their lives are predetermined
