Q

Required Practical 7a Measuring Initial Rate

A
  • Measure 50 cm³ of the 1.0 mol dm⁻³ hydrochloric acid and add to conical flask.
  • Setup the gas syringe in the stand.
  • Weigh 0.20 g of magnesium.
  • Add the magnesium ribbon to the conical flask, place the bung firmly into the top of the flask, and start the stopwatch.
  • Record the volume of hydrogen gas collected in 30 seconds.
  • Repeat using different concentrations of HCl.
  • Draw a graph and analyse the data.

Q

7b Measuring Continuous Rate. How?

A

A better experiment is to measure the volume of gas produced at 10-second intervals for two minutes. You can get much more data and analyse how the rate changes over time for each test.
