Prac 12: Reproduction Flashcards
What kind of cells line the endocervix?
Simple columnar epithelial cells
What is the epithelium lining the endocervix specialised to do?
Secrete mucous
What kind of epithelium lines the fallopian tubes?
Ciliated columnar
What kind of epithelium lines the epididymis?
Ciliated pseudostratified columnar
What kind of epithelium lines the vas deferens?
Ciliates pseudostratified columnar
What kind of epithelium lines the ducts of secretory endometrium?
Columnar cells containing clear spaces beneath the nuclei (unstained because they contain glycogen)
What kind of epithelium lines the ducts of proliferative endometrium?
Tightly packed, basophilic columnar cells containing mitotic figures.
What are the two layers of cells lining glands of the prostate? What is the morphology of the gland?
The glands are lined by 2 layers of cells, a basal layer and a secretory layer. The secretory epithelium is mainly pseudostratified, comprising tall columnar cells and basal cells which are supported by a fibroelastic stroma containing randomly oriented smooth muscle bundles. The epithelium is highly variable and areas of low cuboidal or squamous epithelium are also present, with transitional epithelium in the distal regions of the longer ducts.
What are the components of the cervical stroma (5)?
fibrous connective tissue with elastin, smooth muscle, blood and lymphatic vessels, lymphocytes and antigen presenting cells (located under the epithelium).
What are the 2 histological features of cervical epithelium infected with HPV?
Koilocytes (cells with areas of clear cytoplasm around large irregular nuclei in the upper epithelium) and mild nuclear atypia (enlargement, mild pleomorphism, disorganisation) of cells in the basal third of the epithelium.
Where does cervical adenocarcinoma arise from?
Arises from the glands of the endocervix
What is a common way for cervical adenocarcinoma to spread?
The tumour invades locally into adjacent tissues such as uterus, vagina, bladder and rectum
What are the two components of the endometrum?
Epithelium and stroma
What are the characteristics of secretory endometrium? (2)
‘saw tooth’, irregular or coiled glands and absence of mitotic activity in the epithelium.
What are the three kinds of primary tumour that can arise from the ovary?
- The germ cell tumours, derived from the germ cells or oocytes,
- tumours derived from stromal cells (sex cord -stromal tumours)
- epithelial tumours (most common) which are believed to originate from the surface mesothelium, which may undergo a metaplastic process to give rise to the epithelial tumours.
