Prac 11: Musculoskeletal Flashcards
What are the 2 types of cell that make up the synovial membrane?
Macrophage-like “Type A” synoviocytes and fibroblast-like “Type B” synoviocytes.
Does the synovial membrane contain blood and lymphatics?
Yes, in abundance.
Describe the relationship between GAGs, hyaluronic acid and proteoglycans
Hyaluronic acid has side-chains of proteoglycans (such as aggrecan) which have their own side chains of glycosaminoglycans (such as chondroitin sulphate).
What are the two components contained within a Haversian canal?
Capillaries and connective tissue.
From which cells are chondrocytes derived?
Osteoprogenitor cells
Is there a significant increase in inflammatory cells in bone and soft tissue in osteoarthritis?
No
What are the changes to the synovium in RA (4)?
Villous hyperplasia, mononuclear infiltrate, plasma cells, germinal centres
What protein is the amyloid protein that can be deposited in RA derived from?
Serum amyloid associated protein (SAA protein)
What are 4 conditions other than RA that can result in the same kind of amyloid being deposited?
Tuberculosis, inflammatory bowel disease, bronchiectasis, chronic osteomyelitis.
