Cautions of PPI

A

MC GOLF

Magnesium - measure this especially with drugs that cause hypomagnesemia e.g. digoxin

C - masks symptoms of cancer

G - Can cause GI infections and issues (C.diff, N+V etc)

O - Osteoarthritis

L - Lupus (MHRA warning)

F - Fractures

A
  • Risk of SCLE - lesions appear on the skin when exposed to sunlight. If possible, consider discontinuing

What interaction should we watch out for with PPIs

A

Avoid CLOE

(clopidogrel and omeprazole/esomeprazole. Lowers efficacy of clopidogrel so use other PPIs with it

Methotrexate - omeprazole decreases metabolism of methotrexate
