What is category 1 PPE?
Simple design
Minimal risk
Self-certified and CE marked
What is category 2 PPE?
Intermediate design
Type tested by notified body and CE marked
What is category 3 PPE?
Complex design
Risk of death or irreversible harm
Type tested by notified body, CE marked and monitoring of quality. (ISO9000)
What are some considerations for the type of PPE?
Is the atmosphere fit to breathe?
Dust, gas, vapour, etc?
What is the WEL?
What is the concentration of the contaminant?
What are personal considerations for RPE selection?
Medical fitness
Face size and shape
Face seal / fit
Facial hair
Comparability with other PPE and spectacles
Work factors ( duration of use, work rate mobility, visibility, communication )
What is the ‘P’ rating?
It is the protection factor and ranges from P1 to P3. P3 offers the most protection.

No significant odour or taste
Impurities less than 1/10th of WEL
Sufficient flow supply for each person using the system
