They can scrutinise / investigate these appointments and reject any they think are unfit.

In 2005, pres. George W. Bush nominated Harriet Miers for Supreme Court. Enough members were against this nomination to have Bush withdraw the nomination.

Congresses powers in proposing legislation?
A
- while the president can propose a law, it has to be a member of congress that submits it to be discussed
- members of congress have to lobby the bill on the presidents behalf.
- only if more than 50% of the congress vote yes on the bill is it passed to the pres.

Congress can overturn a veto with a two-thirds majority in both senate and the House of Representatives
