What is TANF?

- primary goal is to get the recipient off welfare and into employment.
- maximum single period you can receive TANF is 24 months, and across a lifetime just 60 months

A
- From its introduction in 1996 until the 2008 recession, the no. of people on TANF reduced every year.
- from 10 million in 1997 to 3.79 million in 2008
- was a spike in recession, but has since started to fall again

what are the limitations of TANF?

- the amount of money made available by the gov has fallen every year
- the amount has stayed the sam but didn’t adjust for inflation
- families in 2015 cannot buy the same amount of goods of TANF as recipients in 97.
- TANF has increased poverty in some families as it forces parents to get poorly paying jobs/ 2 or 3 jobs and end up resulting in more money being spent.

- the Gang. prevention, Intervention and Supression Act 2009

- protects communities/ citizens
- most gang members are EMs, so reducing the no. of gangs/members will, in the long term, reduce the no. of EMs in prison

- aims to extend health insurence coverage to the 15% of Americans who don’t have it
- law requires everyone to have HI
- offers subsidies to make it more affordable
- doesn’t let HI companies deny the already sick/old

What Are the limitations of Obamacare?
A
- companies have to pay for employees health
- isn’t that much cheaper than normal HI
- raises taxes
- focuses more on coverage than confronting the high costs of HI
