Power supply Flashcards
Zinc Carbon Or
Leclanche or dry cell
What does the dry cell use as an electrolyte
The zinc-carbon or dry cell uses ammonium chloride paste as an electrolyte, the zinc and the carbon rod has the electrodes
What happens between the ammonium chloride paste and zinc
A chemical reaction that produces lots of electrons, the electrons move to the bottom of the battery, making it negatively charged, the brass cup is positively charged, this p.d between the terminals supply power
What does the manganese oxide do
Acts as a depolarizing agent, it removes hydrogen produces in the chemical reaction (hydrogen is undesirable because it hinders the production process)
What are other examples of Primary cells
Alkaline manganese batteries, silver oxide or lithium eg, the button cless used in calculators
Definition of secondary cless
Can be recharged by passing a current in the opposite direction that that when its in use (when its supplying the current)
Examples of secondary cells
Car batteries, camera, cell phone
Difference between secondary cells to primary cells
Rechargeable, produces larger current over a longer time period, larger terminal potential difference, more expensive
When you are using your phone
It is being discharged
