Electromagnetic induction Flashcards
What is electromagnetic induction?
The phenomenon which results in the production of an electric current due to the relatic motion of a conductor when placed in a magentic field
When a conductor is moved across a magnetic field (perpendicularly) to the field lines
Cutting is said to have occurred and an e.m.f is induced across the ends of the conductor
When is a current produced
if the conductor is part of a closed circuit
Laws of electromagnetic induction
Faraday’s law
Lenz’s law
Faradays law
The size of magnitude of the induced EMF is directly proportional to the rate of cutting of the field lines
What increases rate of cutting
Increase # turns on solenoid
Increase speed of motion
use a stronger magnet (increases field lines)
Lenz’s law
That the direction of the induced current is such that it opposes the change that caused it
