Galvanometer Flashcards
What is a galvanometer (shunt)
Can be modified to work as an ammeter by connecting a resistor of low value in parallel across its terminals, this arrangement is called a shunt
What happens at the junction
the large current splits, most of it goes through the shunt where that value of current can be calculated, leaving a much smaller current to pass through the galvanometer safely
A galvanometer can be used as
A voltmeter by connecting a resistor of high value in series. Since volt meters have high resistances, this arrangement will work in a similar fashion
What is the resistor called in the voltmeter
Multiplier which is connected in parallel across terminals of the device whose p.d is being measured. Most of the current passes through the device
The current in the multiplier=
current through the galvanometer and thus voltage can be calculated
