Power saws Flashcards
What is set vs kerf?
Set is the shape that the teeth are bent out from the blade and kerf is the distance between
What is saw blade gauge?
The thickness of the blade
How many teeth need to be in contact with the work piece?
Three teeth
What is the process in which the metal band saw blade is softened after welding?
annealing
Where do you normally adjust the tracking on a band saw?
The idler wheel
If one side of the set is worn out what will happen to the cut?
It will start to track to the side of the piece that still has teeth
What is the band guide and where should it be placed?
The band guide is a device that sits on either side of the blade that keeps in on the right path, it should be set as close to the work piece as possible.
When cutting a solid thick piece what kind of pitch should you use?
A low pitch (teeth further apart) due to the teeth dragging material a long way across the part while cutting
How is the velocity of the band blade measured?
Surface Feet Per Minute (imperial) Surface Meter Per Minute (metric)
What to keep in mind for blade selection when it comes to band saws?
Hardness of material, what kind of alloy or material it is, thickness of material (thin walled or think solid material)
What happens if the blade teeth or material starts changing colour?
You change the properties of the metals which could weaken it and dull or break quicker
What is a cold saw? and what are the benefits?
A cold saw has a circular blade that is run on a very low speed, This gives you a clean finish and can cut very quickly
What are the three main tooth forms for horizontal band saws?
Standard, Skip and Hook
Do abrasive cutting tools operate at a high RPM?
Yes
How do you calculate bandsaw length?
The circumference of one wheel plus the distance in the middle of the two wheels (BL= Diameter x 3.14 + 2L)
