Drilling Flashcards
What are the different types of drill press’s?
Sensitive drill press, up right drill press’s, radial arm drill press’s
What drives sensitive drill press’s?
V belts
What does the upright drill press use to drive the spindle?
A geared head to permit the slow spindle speed and high torque
What are the three most common included angles in drill bit tips?
118 (all purpose) 150 (hard materials) 90 (soft material)
Drill bit use a number system to identify size of drill bits. 1-97, what number is the biggest vs’s the smallest?
97 is the smallest and 1 is the biggest
Center drills have what point angle?
60 degrees
What are the three parts a twist drill are divided into?
Point, body and shank
What size taper per foot does a moris taper have?
5/8 per foot
Can a straight or tapered shank be held more securely?
A tapered shank can be held more securely
Where should twist drill bits be measured from?
The margains
What are the three main parts on the point of the drill bit?
The lip or cutting edge, the chisel edge and the lip clearance
Where is the cutting edge and what does it do?
It is the material that does the cutting and is located between the chisel edge and the margins
Where is the chisel edge and what does it do?
It is the part that is left over between the cutting lips, it guides the drill bit into the workpiece
Where is the lip clearance and what does it do?
It is the materials that is behind the cutting lip towards the heel and it provides the clearance the drill needs to cut and go into the workpiece
What are high helix drill bits good for?
The are good for drilling deep holes in soft material, they allow the chips to not build up and clog the drill
