Mixture of finely divided drugs or chemicals in dry form which can be used internally or externally
Powders
Powders for dispensing non-potent, powdered drugs that have doses requiring moderate to large volumes of powder
Bulk powders for internal use
Powders that cannot be used for drugs that require precise and accurate dosing
Bulk powders
Bulk powders that are locally applied nontoxic preparations that are intended to have no systemic action.
Dusting powders
Bulk powder generally containing a soap or detergent, mild abrasive and an anticariogenic agent
Dentifrices
Bulk powders intended to be dissolved in water prior to use as antiseptics or cleansing agents for a body cavity.
Douche powders
These are finely divided powders introduced into body cavities such as the ears, nose, throat, tooth sockets and vagina.
Insufflations
Have individual doses of powder packaged in folded papers or plastic bags.
Divided powders
absorbs moisture, but does not dissolve
Hygroscopic
absorbs moisture and eventually dissolves
Deliquescent
Not suitable for large quantities of powders or for powders that can contain potent substance
Spatulation
Not recommended for mixing potent drugs into diluent
Sifting
Used when blending 2 or more powders of unequal quantity
Geometric dilution
Aka 1:10 dilution (10%)
Trituration
mixing powders in a large container rotated by a motorized process
