-tried to tackle with his New Frontier
-set up Peace Corps to help get American values back
-increased min. wage - good but only for those with world
-slum clearance led to shortage of housing
-Housing Act and Social Security Act made benefits available to poorer people (poorest people couldn’t afford loans)
Johnson
-tried to take New Frontier to ‘Great Society’
-set up Medical Care Act (1965) - federal money into hospitals for old/poor
-VISTA programme was trying to create jobs for poor inner city areas
-government spending on welfare and war in Vietnam was out of control
-lost credibility, so did not stand for re-election
Nixon
-criticised Johnson’s Welfare ideas but then expanded on them
-spent more money on issues of poverty
-tax reform to help ill/disabled
-20% increase on social security spending
-‘Watergate’ scandal overshadowed presidency and he resigned in 1974
-due to his resignation, National Health Insurance Partnership Program 1974 to bring medical care to poorest people, didn’t happen
